Where did it come from? What does it represent, exactly?
Regarding my reference to "quaternions". It was intended as a joke, primarily
for the benefit of old aerospace engineers. (A quaternion is a set of 4
numbers, like a complex number with 4 parts, which can be used to describe
the orientation of an object.)
