That may indicate it's a 1D file, not a NIML file. That should be ok though; SUMA should still be able to read it.

I assume that nodes are numbered from 0 to 198811 (inclusive), for 198812 nodes in total, is that correct?
That would be consistent with using surfaces from MapIcosahedron with the ld=141 option, as for such surfaces, the number of nodes is 141^2*10+2=198812.
If you try:
suma -i std.141.lh.smoothwm.asc
can you then load the mask file?
If not, what is the output of:
SurfInfo std.141.lh.smoothwm.asc
