Off-topic, but there is some interest in the Fink community to publish an official bin-dist again. The Todai team used to make them available, but after the tsunami in Japan they seem to be down.
I'm not part of the Fink team, but from what I understand the real problem is that building all of these packages isn't a sexy job. The scripts to build everything are quite out of date and a bit primitive. I've attempted to work on it, but other things at work keep getting priority.
All that being said, including all of the dependencies with the official AFNI binary would help a lot. Having an external dependency makes things more difficult than it needs to be.
I don't think moving to MacPorts is the solution. I don't want to go on a rant, but we use MacPorts here and it causes more than its fair share of headaches.
