Try writing the modified annotation file in GIFTI format then try loading it into SUMA and see if it works.

It is hard for me to debug this problem, it seems like SUMA is not seeing you newly edited annotation file, otherwise, when you display it it should show you at least that the area you split up has multiple values in it.

Try and see if mris_convert can turn the annotation file (your newly edited one, or the older -default- one) into GIFTI format.
