Hi Nick,

Actually, I don't know anything about SPM, but just for your information, there is an AFNI program named "3dBlurToFWHM". It iteratively blurs little bit to a target FWHM.

It might be worthy to test various situations you imagine by using 3dBlurToFWHM program. 3dmerge with default options works simply averaging signals within weighted masks centered at each voxel.
