Is anyone else interested in using the "Ubuntu" within Windows 10 Preview? Preview build 14332 of Windows 10 (26 April) allowed me to apt-get install afni (see screenshot). I also Installed Xming (Windows X-server, default config) and launched from the bash command line using "DISPLAY=:0 afni". The afni GUI window, text window, axial image, and sagittal image windows appeared as usual. In the screenshot all the afni windows have been dragged using their title bars. The coronal image opened after clicking within the afni GUI. That new window was also dragged by its title bar. The scroll bars for slice selection work as usual. Clicking on "Overlay" in the GUI expanded the GUI window, as usual. What _DID NOT_ work as usual: (1) Afni crashed when I clicked on an afni window that was overlapping the icon for a Windows shortcut, as though the mouse coordinates were interpreted as Windows-related rather than X11-related. (2) Afni crashes when I try to drag the corner of an afni image window to change window size, with X-server complaints.
I am pleasantly surprised that the "Ubuntu" within Windows 10 Preview, which does not use a Linux kernal, might allow for afni to run on the Windows platform. My motivation is that our IT department charges >$1K/yr to administer a Linux box, but <$100/yr to administer a Windows box. Public release of the Windows 10 update is sometime this summer (speculatively, 29 July) at which time its internal "Ubuntu" will supposedly be 16.04 rather than the current 14.04
