I use the DYLD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH
export DYLD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/X11/lib:/usr/local/abin
I haven't had any problems lately. There is a pending Xquartz patch that I haven't applied yet.
