GAM is typically used for event-related experiments. If you want to specify the duration of the stimulus, use BLOCK(d,p), where d and p are the duration and peak respectively (e.g., BLOCK(1,1) in your case). However, with a duration of 1 second, GAM (without specifying the duration) should be good enough if your TR is around 2 seconds: such a short duration (relative to TR) won't make much difference.
