There are no other solutions than to install the GNU scientific library, as root. Presumably there will be instructions on how to do this on the page I linked, and with a little luck that process will install (or compile and install) the shared library in the same location as your other shared libs, and stuff will just work.

If not, now's a great time to befriend somebody at your institution who knows a lot about UNIX.
