One question: could you elaborate on what is a "NIFTI dataset with an AFNI extension"? My thinking was that any dataset in HEAD/BRIK format was an AFNI dataset, containing the various additional AFNI niceties in the header. My interpretation of your reply is that perhaps there are other distinctions that I did not know about. Could you comment?
