There are at least two factors that may impact on the selection of hemodynamic response (HDR) model:
(1) Experiment type: event-related or block design? In general, 'BLOCK(d,p)' is good enough most of the time for block designs while the following models can be used for event-related experiments: 'TENT(b,c,n)', 'CSPLIN(b,c,n)', 'GAM(p,q)', 'SPMG1', 'SPMG2', 'SPMG3'.
(2) Goal of the experiment: do you just want to detect the BOLD response amplitude? Do you care about subtle shape differences in HDR? With the former 'BLOCK(d,p)' and 'GAM' (or the SPM models) are probably good enough for event-related and block design respectively. If HDR shape subtleties are of interest, use 'TENT(b,c,n)' or 'CSPLIN(b,c,n)'.
