The Department of Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Instructor position in the Academic Support Staff. This appointment will be initially for one (1) year and continuation during that time period and renewal are based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding (limited to three (3) years). The successful applicant will have experience in the field of neuroimaging with a focus on elucidating mechanisms of neuroplasticity induced by rTMS. Responsibilities include studying fundamental mechanisms of neural function/dysfunction, using rTMS in psychiatric illness and brain computer interfaces. The applicant will collaborate on fMRI studies of task-related and resting state functional connectivity and its alterations by neuromodulatory techniques. These include Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Transcranial Direct-Current Stimulation (tDCS) cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), antidepressants and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The Department of Psychiatry and Center for Neuromodulation in Depression and Stress at the University of Pennsylvania offer a highly collaborative, intellectually stimulating research environment. The successful candidate will have ample opportunities for collaboration across a variety of disciplines and will have access to the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, the Center for Functional Imaging and the Program on Depression and Anxiety, among others. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree.

Applicants with a doctoral degree in bioengineering, cognitive neuroscience, experimental psychology or related disciplines, a track record of productivity and innovation, and demonstrated excellent qualifications in neuroimaging are encouraged to apply. Prior experience during a post-doctoral fellowship in neuroimaging using rTMS is essential. Competitive candidates must have strong programming skills. MATLAB is essential; familiarity with other languages is desirable. C/C++ (and derivatives), LabVIEW, and Python are all of interest. Prior experience with interfacing to data acquisition hardware and/or creating real-time systems will be strongly favored. Evidence of productivity in independent work, problem-solving, and initiative-taking. Interpersonal skills appropriate for collaboration in a multidisciplinary, diverse environment. Preference will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following: Prior work with psychiatric patient populations or the biological mechanisms of mental illness; Skills in electronics design and fabrication; Experience in or familiarity with the design of brain-computer interfaces and/or brain decoding paradigms.

Candidates must be able to work collaboratively with excellent oral and written communication skills.
