Her script was not written in bash.

Sure, one can put a comment in the middle of a
multi-line command in tcsh (though it would not
surprise me if some versions did not allow it,
certainly not in the "old" days).

This works fine,for example:

echo hello from a     \
# some stupid comment \
multi-line script

The output is:

hello from a multi-line script

If that does not work for you, I would be curious
what version of tcsh you are running. Are you
on a solaris system?
