I think that indeed that older version of AFNI binaries had a mismatch with the R_io.so and R version 3.6. Since that time we have resolved that issue in that particular file.

So, if you update your AFNI binaries:

@update.afni.binaries -d

... that should sort things out.

Please let us know if that does/doesn't work!
