Thanks, Doug, that did the trick.

Yesterday I had installed not only the latest version of AFNI, but also the latest version of FreeSurfer. It turns out that an older version of AFNI is bundled along with the FreeSurfer distribution, and this was interfering with the newer version of AFNI I had downloaded.
