They are there for a few special uses. For example, some synthetic (processed) datasets have a huge range of numbers; the Log10 function is useful for compressing these for display (like log plots are for graphing).

For printing images, sometimes smoothing them with the Median or Winsor filters makes them look better on a laser printer. Obviously, this requires experimentation on your part.
