Hi Doug,
Can you upload that dataset for me (see instructions link above) ? I'd like to look into this in detail, I and others are trying to make reading SPM a little less painful.
On a similar note, assuming you have a series of 3D ANALYZE files that together form a time series and each one of these volumes has a .mat file with it. What is the recommended way to have SPM reslice the volumes so that AFNI can read the data without worrying about the transforms in .mat?
