I have been trying to install AFNI and have run into the same problem. I do have X11 installed and (as far as I can tell) working fine. There is no lib directory under /usr/local (Mac OS 10.3.7). There is a libXm.3.dylib and a libXm.3.0.1.dylib under /sw/lib.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
