sorry, i didn't answer your first question.

1 0 0 columns were added to include some kind of color index or something. we used it when we previously worked with the parcelated label files. I can't remember why, it was VERY long ago, but it had to do with specifying color ranges.

With what is going on here, I would almost say the node index isn't right, because the 1D.dset file in SUMA looks like the result we get in AFNI after the 3dSurf2Vol command. Is there a problem with the mri_label2label command i might have missed? --something with surfaces and the different node index maybe?

not that i presume to know what i'm talking about! : )
