History of AFNI updates

Now, it seems that macports is currently a better maintained distribution (software versions are more recent) than fink. Is there any reason why the preferred AFNI way is fink rather than macports (and the binaries are thus linked to fink paths)?

On this topic, if one would want to stick with macports and had therefore to compile AFNI from source: is there still a way to update regularly only the code that has changed on the AFNI repository compared to the local version (e.g., CVS)?

thanks
