Hi Ian,

I do not know where libexpat comes from under that tree.
Did you install the X development package?

Alternatives that you can try:
1. try to install via fink (though that may not come with the .a version):
1a. sudo fink install expat
1b. maybe change "/usr/X11R6/lib/libexpat.a" to "-lexpat"

2. forget about GIfTI support for now, so comment out the lines:
2a. USE_GIFTI = -DHAVE_GIFTI
2b. LGIFTI = /usr/X11R6/lib/libexpat.a
