The dataset is brain data acquired down the hall here and turned into AFNI format by Jerzy's realtime application. It has gone through a few standard AFNI preprocessing functions like 3dTstat, 3dvolreg, 3dAutomask, etc.
Byteswapping doesn't seem to be the answer, for two reasons. First, the original version could be viewed as brain data in the AFNI window, but the byteswapped version could not. Second, float_scan on both the original and byteswapped version produced the same error.
