this suggests there is just one column (sub brick) in the dataset.

As a first step I think you should figure out which data you are using. Are you sure you are using the right data as input?
If you want to use this file with 3dcalc you can just do "-a v2s.MaskS_unsmooth_corr_movie_gb_11.nii.gz.lh.TS.niml.dset", as there is only one column. Or, to be explicit, "-a v2s.MaskS_unsmooth_corr_movie_gb_11.nii.gz.lh.TS.niml.dset'[0]'" - that is with single quote, opening bracket, zero, closing bracket, single quote - should work as well.
