That is one place to set it. The other is in your .cshrc script, which is executed by the shell when you login (assuming you are using the C shell) -- if you edit the .cshrc file, it will only take effect when you next login.

For the .afnirc file, type "cd" to get to your home directory, then the minimal file would look something like this:

***ENVIRONMENT

AFNI_PLUGINPATH = /path/to/where/you/installed/it/
