I did finally figure out what had happened, though I still don't really know why. It turns out that the pial surface file was never created in FreeSurfer, thus was not converted for use in SUMA. So SUMA didn't have the appropriate data to display. Once I re-ran the surface creation in FreeSurfer, re-converted the surfaces, and displayed in SUMA, everything looked great.
