I just found an easier way to do this and thought I'd share my simple but thrilling discovery with the rest of the world :).
3dclust -1dindex 5 -1tindex 5 -1thresh $zthresh -noabs $rmm $vmul dataset+orig
where subbrick 5 is the z-stat subbrick.
The 11th column, "Mean", of the 3dclust output, contains the average z-scores per cluster. Weehoo!
