Even though you have 8 GB of RAM on those computers, you are running
out for some reason. One thing you might do is run "top" in some
terminal, and monitor it over time. Maybe there are other processes
that also use a lot of RAM.
On the line that starts with "PhysMem", watch the "used" and "free"
values. What sort of numbers are you seeing there over time?

In any case, the question is why are you using more than 3.5 GB of
RAM with afni? Is there some memory leak in afni, or have you been
looking at any large datasets?
Are there some big datasets in that directory that you have also had
open (besides the small, 10 MB datasets)? Check the output of
"ls -lh *.BRIK*" in that directory. Is there anything big that you
might have had open?
If you are running out of RAM because of opening large datasets, note
that you can free up memory from previous datasets via:
Define Datamode -> Misc -> Purge Memory
