The problem was a little more subtle than that, but
was still based on Apple's GNU compilers and Xcode.

The basic solution was to update Xcode.

Update: Kevin informs me that Xcode 3.1.1 and earlier
displayed this problem, while 3.1.2 and later did not.
Note that this applies to both Intel and G5 macs.
