The FATCAT Demo has some examples of both of these. It's a useful thing to go through-- there is a description README*txt file and several commented scripts. To download it, run:
$ @Install_FATCAT_DEMO
For the ROI insertion, there is an example of creating surface contours from the ROIs in the file: Do_05_RUNdti_DET_tracking.tcsh. There is a loop at the bottom of the file for creating *.niml.dset files for each network (of which there are 4) in the demo set using 3dVol2Surf.
The second SUMA command in Do_06*tcsh then gives an example of visualizing this with tracts. And also, the first suma command in the same Do_06*tcsh file has an example of visualizing who brain tracts with slices of an mprage included.
